Save the date for Saturday, February 1, as we welcome the Year of the Snake with an exciting day of cultural activities. In partnership with the New York Chinese Cultural Center and the South Street Seaport Museum, join us to celebrate Lunar New Year with live performances, crafts, and more.
Traditional Lion Dance
Two lion dance performances will take place in front of Tin Building, kicking off at 12:00pm. If you miss your chance to catch the action and snap some photos during the first performance, the lions will perform again for you to enjoy.
Two 15min Lion Dance performances followed by a 15min photo op.
Chinese Calligraphy Workshops
February 1 | 2pm, 3pm, 4pm | 207 Water Street | Free
Join the Seaport Museum and skilled teaching artists from the New York Chinese Cultural Center for one of three delightful 45-minute workshops exploring the art of Chinese Calligraphy and its importance to the Lunar New Year. While primarily designed for children ages 7–12, these workshops are open to all ages free. As part of the neighborhood Lunar New Year celebration, the Seaport Museum is offering free General Admission on February 1.
Nautical Chinese Lion Chains
February 1 | 11am–4:30pm | 12 Fulton Street | Free
The Lunar New Year celebration continues at the South Street Seaport Museum with free admission to the Museum’s historic ships and introduction galleries. While you explore, stop by the introduction galleries at 12 Fulton Street to make a maritime-inspired spin on a Chinese Lion Chain craft. Come create your own unique lion chain decoration using paper links inspired by the colorful signal flags, which sailors use to communicate.
This activity is included with free admission tickets to the Museum. Pre-book free admission to the Seaport Museum.
