Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season and a great start to 2024. In January, a great thing to do is catch some free movie screenings,  live TV show tapings, and museums, so I’m sharing a few of my favorite options throughout the newsletter.

UPCOMING EVENTS (THIS WEEK):

⛸️ Ice Theatre City Skate Pop Up Concert (January 4):  Join Ice Theatre this Winter for pop up concerts at neighborhood rinks! The pop-up series kicks off in 2024 with a performance at Wollman Rink

🐪 Three Kings Day Parade at El Museo del Barrio (January 5): Head to El Barrio (East Harlem) for the 47th Annual Three Kings Day Parade and Celebration featuring camels, floats, live music, and more

💫 Saks Holiday Light Display (through January 5): Be sure to check out this beautiful Dior x Saks holiday light display through January 5th (5-10pm every night)

🏀 New Year Family Day at Fort Hamilton Rec Center (January 6): Test out classes/programs at Fort Hamilton Recreation Center for one day for FREE, including art, dance, fitness, games, and sports

🍵 Winter Tea in Prospect Park (January 6): Enjoy an afternoon of a short nature walk through Prospect Park, followed by tea, music and a multilingual poetry performance

🖌️ Michael Richards: Are You Down? at Bronx Museum (January 6): Celebrate the closing weekend of this exhibition with a film screening, discussion, and walkthrough (1040 Grand Concourse)

📸 Shopify New Day Soiree (January 9): Shopify is having a day of fresh starts and creativity, with free headshots, mocktails, a creative workshop & more (131 Greene Street)

🎼 A Prize For Every Player: Pop-Up Opera Preview (January 13): A special preview of a new pop-up opera, which will take place throughout a storefront in Manhattan

🧡 Caribbean Life Health & Wellness Expo (January 13): A comprehensive health and wellness event dedicated to the African American and Caribbean community in Brooklyn, including free health screenings, expert talks, interactive workshops & more (1367 Utica Avenue)

🖥️ Wikipedia Day (January 14): Celebrate Wikipedia’s 23rd birthday with panels, speakers and discussions, a one-of-a-kind Wikipedia-themed birthday cake, and more (2950 Broadway)

👚 Clothing Swap at Otto’s Shrunken Head (January 16): Get ready to trade, swap, and refresh your wardrobe at this clothing swap event hosted by Adverse Abstraction (538 E 14th Street)

MISC, RECURRING & DEALS:

📺 Live Taping of the Sherri Show: Get free tickets to be an audience member of Sherri, a super fun show on live TV! + write NYCFORFREE in the comments when you apply for tickets & you’ll be upgraded to VIP!

🎥 Free Movie Screenings: Check out this list for some hacks to watch new movies in theaters for free! Most premieres fill up quickly, so you’ll need to act fast in some cases to score tickets! 

🖼️ Free / Pay What You Wish Museums: Most major museums in NYC have dedicated days & hours where there is free entry (or Pay What You Wish, starting at $!) Check out the NYC for FREE website for a list

Field of Light at Freedom Plaza: You can now walk in to Field of Light! This FREE public art features  a winding path through 17,000 lowlight, fiber-optic stemmed spheres.

🕯️ Candlelight Concerts: If you’re looking for something fun to do at night, check out a candlelight concert. They have live performances from Rihanna to Adele at amazing NYC locations. Check out a video on it here
