APPARATUS, the interdisciplinary design studio that explores the relationship of lighting, furniture, objects, and spaces, invites you to SUBJECTS: BIOGRAPHIES IN LIGHT, a new photography and video exhibition at its New York showroom.
The studio celebrates the launch of its new CYLINDER : SYSTEM of modular lighting with this original exhibition that features its Artistic Director Gabriel Hendifar and closest collaborators such as Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera Yannick Nézet-Séguin; model Debra Shaw; artist and designer Dianne Brill; cabaret artist Justin Vivian Bond; dancer Jacob Larsen; and designer Athena Calderone. Photographers Matthew Placek and Dina Litovsky capture these talents in intimate and idiosyncratic portraits and video interviews. During the interviews, the subjects answer questions about connection and creativity such as: “When does a stranger become a friend?” and “What does the word ‘muse’ mean to you?” The subjects are all illuminated by the CYLINDER : SYSTEM of lighting.
This exhibition embodies APPARATUS’ approach to design which emphasizes the importance of human experience and connection and exemplifies Gabriel’s belief that design should leave an emotional imprint and enrich the way we live, both individually and collectively.
APPARATUS is displaying this work in a private space in its showroom. Visitors can also explore the rest of the studio, which includes the iconic Red Room.
